2002-06-05 why is it so hard to look ahead? i've always enjoyed it, in fact, I'd err on the opposite end of the forward-thinking spectrum, easily accused of spending too little time in the present. but i'd argue that it is helpful to clarify for oneself what one does and does not want a couple of years down the road; and to adjust those assumptions/ideals as you grow. i'm quite sure that if i did not spend any time considering what it was i wanted out of different aspects of my life (work, family, etc.)-- I would truly feel i was wasting my life. wasting, because my inner life would lack direction or meaning. wasting, because i'd be pissing on the opportunities that came my way. wasting, because it's right to have priorities, even if those priorities change every now and then. just pick a position and defend it, damnit. ----------------------------------
